Holidays with the Huttons

In July we enjoyed the MUCH anticipated visit from the ´country cousins´.  From the moment they arrived in the Buenos Aires airport there were laughs and fun all round ... starting with a fashion attack on the capital city ...  animal print lives on ...


... then off to La Cumbrecita and Los Cocos, two of our favourite locations in the Córdoba hills.

Every member of the family was keen to soak up Argentine life and culture. The kids accompanied their cousins to class (enduring a full school day in Spanish and Italian), ate a whole plate of the national dish ´locro´ (whose key ingredient is tripe in a thick fatty sauce!), drank ´mate´ constantly, tried their spanish out on locals ... we were amazed by their willingness to give everything a go, and their eagerness to get to know our argentine life and friends.

On their way???

It seems like the Hutton tribe is on their way to Argentina... a late scare at the airport when they were told that they would have to wait for the flight on Thursday (2 days later), but it seems all was rectified and they are on their way... the excitement builds!

Excitement in the house

We are eagerly waiting the arrival of an Australian invasion... the cousins are about to arrive and i'm sure it is going to be noisy!

Martin's sister Meredith and her husband Michael also have 4 kids- the same ages as our 4. They arrive in Buenos Aires in about 24 hours time.

The next talk

The next talk in the series 'Creer es también pensar' (to believe is also to think) is coming up next Monday. This time in the Psychology faculty on the theme of Resiliencia- not sure it has a translation. It is a technique which seeks to use narrative and stories to help people overcome difficulties.

Master Chef Material

Our kids recently discovered the joys of Junior Master Chef ... yes, we are rather slow over here!!

They now have incredible inspiration in the kitchen, and I am trying to channel this burst of culinary creativity into something practical for our day-to-day needs (yes, recipes are useful, and no, I don´t think a ´savoury meringue´ would be particularly tasty).

Look at what happens when one is left to prepare mashed potato ...

Talk number 2

Marcelo

 The second public ABUA talk on campus was a success.
It was held in the Economics Faculty, and various newcomers attended.
The speaker, Marcelo Lopez, challenged students to use their university training in the service of others, and demonstrated possibilities for helping the poor start up their own income generating activities to escape poverty.
Afterwards we continued chatting over afternoon tea on the faculty lawn.

Did you notice the furry visitor in the lecture room photo?  Argentine educational institutions are incomplete without a stray dog or two in the mix.

Green thumb?

The eldest grandson will make granddad proud ... he has developed an interest in all things horticultural.

He and a schoolfriend are planting wierd things and doing science experiments, just for fun ... we have avocado seeds awaiting germination in the garage, and orange seeds in the patio ...

So what do you buy for your 15 year schoolfriend for his birthday?   A fruit tree of course!

Lachie is very proud of his gift ... a Red Delicious apple tree.  It is the middle of winter, so the poor little sapling is nothing but a stick with three sad little leaves.
