It was Election Day on the uni campus today. All of the faculties had elections for their 'Centro de Estudiantes' as well as representatives on the councils of the faculties. Like any uni there are a host of different parties and groups, some with the backing of the main political parties.
Voting is compulsory in the student elections, unless you are in first year. You have to take along your student 'libreta' (a book which keeps track of all your subjects and results). It's not clear what happens if you don't vote- some students told me that apparently they could check your libreta before you graduate, but they haven't heard of it happening.
