A massive storm hit Cordoba on Monday afternoon,to relieve the 44 degree heat. It's not the first ugly black cloud mass to threaten from the south, but this one brought with it intense rain and hail, and wind speeds of 120km/hour.
The destruction throughout the city was incredible ... fallen trees blocked the roads and squashed cars and buildings. The sudden burst of rain after drought conditions took the rubbish-choked city drains by surprise, and streets were converted into rivers ... cars carried by the rush of water, and piled together like children's toys. There were 2 deaths, multiple injuries and 350 people evacuated from their flood damaged homes.
We spent the storm at home together, running from window to window securing the wooden blinds and watching the huge old boab trees in the park outside heaving and cracking. Then our internal patio started to fill like a swimming pool, and water seeped into the living room and filled the laundry.
When finally the darkness passed, we cautiously stepped outside to survey the damage. Our suburb had been hit hard, due to its southerly position in the city and the huge number of trees within it. Trees and power poles were blocking major roads.
I have never experienced an Aussie tropical cyclone, but I can now begin to imagine what it must be like. We were without phone line and water for 24 hours and without power for 53 hours. The contents of the fridge were revised and tipped in the garbage!
Although the power returned last night, the sound of chainsaws will continue for quite a while here in Cordoba....
