Licenced to Drive

Julie and I have just obtained our driver's licences for the city of Córdoba!!!
Another experience for the archives. After finally finding the right place to go, we went this morning, expecting to be there all day. All done in 2 hours- must be close to a record for Argentina.
We had to sit a theory exam (in Spanish of course). Julie - full marks! Martin- one error. (There was a moment when I was worried, because I saw that Julie had lots of answers different to mine- fortunately she actually had a different test!)
Its great to know the road rules- now we can keep count of all the road rules that nobody actually obeys. The worst are the rules for roundabouts. Like Australia, the rule is that those in the roundabout (or exiting) have right of way over those who are trying to enter. But in the streets here in Córdoba, 'es un lio'- it's a mess! People actually stop in the middle of the roundabout to give way to cars who are entering. You never know who is going to give way to who. Knowing the rules is one thing- staying alive is another.

We then had to do a 'practical' exam, which simply involved doing a reverse park between two barriers (without hitting them). The space was tiny, but we both passed. Of all the things to test, why this? Not exactly an issue of high importance for safety. And Argentines (in the cities at least) know how to do this very well- finding parking spaces where we would never dream of trying.

But we returned home with our licences- and for 5 years.
