Abandoned kittens find a home
We are constantly shocked by the number of abandoned animals on the streets. Although the council offers a free service to castrate household pets, many argentines believe it is cruel to limit the reproductive ability of their animals. The obvious consequence is an overflow of abandoned puppies and kittens on the streets.
We learned early on that purchasing a pet in Argentina was unnecessary with so many beasties in need of a loving home. Both our dogs have street dog heritage, and when our precious adult cat Champi died last year, we resolved to get a kitten in 2012.
So rather than head to the petshop I looked up the Cordoba Animal adoption service. It is a group of volunteers who offer temporary homes to homeless animals, whilst advertising for permanent owners via their website. It was no problem locating a wide selection of gorgeous kittens on the site ... and we ended up with 2 beautiful sisters, whom we have named ¨Muffin¨ and ´Monty¨.
The surprising part of the experience was the adoptive mother´s response to our adoption of the kittens. She had hand-raised the kittens from a few days of age in her tiny apartment, and understandably was cautious that we would care properly for her little charges. Via email she pressed me with questions about our other pets, our experience with cats etc etc.
However when we arrived to view the kittens her relief was obvious, and although sad to see her ´babies´ leave, she was delighted that we took them home.
So delighted that she put our photo up on her Facebook account and shared her joy with other Cordobese animal lovers ... a HUGE outpouring of animal-loving joy followed.
Obviously it a rare occasion that abandoned animals find a new start.
