6 pesos per day

Statistics have been revealed by INDEC (the Institute of Statistics and Census) that the average argentine family of 2 adults and 2 children requires only 23 pesos a day to cover their daily food needs. In other words, 6 pesos per person should be sufficient to cover breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

The revelation is causing outrage, and I first became aware of the claim today in Bible Study group. The women vented their own frustration at rising food prices, and the difficulty in feeding their families.  And various families from our middle-class church were cited as struggling to get food on the table.

23 pesos a day is far from the truth ... doing the calculations using the cheapest ingredients available at the best price, a family would pay 54 pesos.  Do the sums ...
2 litres of milk ($10), 2 kg bread ($10),  1kg minced meat ($15), 1kg potatoes ($5), 1kg onions ($2), a few vegies ($2), one packet of pasta or rice ($5), tomato pure ($2).

Not a glamorous menu.

And not easy to manage on a family level.  Reading many responses to this news in the paper, it certainly appears that argentines feel lied to, cheated and abandoned by their leadership.
